New Caledonia Travel Photos

New Caledonia, a large French territory between Australia and Fiji, consists of a 400-km-long main island and a number of smaller outer islands. Limestone cliffs alternate with white sandy beaches on the three uplifted atolls of the Loyalty Islands, Mare, Lifou, and Ouvea. To the south, glimmering coral beaches encircle the low volcanic hills of the Isle of Pines.

New Caledonia's capital, Noumea, resembles the smaller towns of southern France. Elsewhere, Melanesian Kanak culture still predominates. The name Jean-Marie Tjibaou is often mentioned when New Caledonia's recent history is discussed. Assassinated in 1989, Tjibaou devoted his life to his people's struggle for independence, yet the French authorities have managed to transform his legacy into a justification for continued colonial rule.
